DSP Thank You Letter: Oral & Steven
On July 19, 2018, after picking up the food to be delivered for a meals on wheels with three individuals aboard the Massapequa Carmans Road wheelchair van, it became apparent that the van was stalling due to some sort of mechanical issue. The driver Oral Jeffers pulled over and shortly thereafter, smoke was observed coming from under the hood of the van. Oral and Steven Daniels – a DSP floater from the Seaford hub site – – immediately went into action to remove the individuals from the van.
Since the lift was not operating, time was of the essence and there was a high need to ensure their safety while smoke was increasing, the 2 wheelchair bound individuals and the 3rd who is ambulatory were extricated through the rear door of the van. Oral and Steve remained focused and calm to swiftly unlock the wheelchairs and physically lift the two individuals in their chairs off the van through the rear door working in conjunction with several good Samaritans that pulled over. This van subsequently became engulfed in flame after the group was assembled in a safe area.
On this day, Oral and Steve truly exemplified *grace under fire*. Along with the families of the 3 individuals, I am immensely grateful to them for their heroic actions which averted a potential tragedy.
